For someone who is just beginning to experience a spiritual awakening, you may notice some of the following signs or symptoms:

1. Questioning Beliefs, Questioning Absolutely Everything

Have you begun to question who you are and what you truly believe in. your beliefs? This can be unsettling as you grapple with these thoughts and you may feel lost, confused, or unsure of your place in the world. You might realize you no longer believe in your religion or faith, or perhaps you realize that a family member who was foundational in your life is not who you thought they were, or perhaps they passed. And then you start to question who are you without that family member, without that foundational sense of the world, or without the beliefs/religion you used to have. If you find yourself in a moment of having no faith or beliefs whatsoever, you may be experiencing a Dark Night of the Soul. Check out this article to learn more about the details of what that feels like and what it can mean.

2. You're a Hot Mess

Deep emotional upheaval is usually present in every spiritual awakening at some point. Perhaps old wounds are resurfacing or new wounds are leading to periods of intense introspection and self-reflection. During a spiritual awakening, suppressed emotions can come to the surface. This can be painful, as you confront past hurts, traumas, or negative experiences you've been avoiding. It's like a deep emotional cleanse, and it can be quite overwhelming but unbelievably healing in the long run. On the other side of this healing experience, you'll feel much lighter, more free. You might feel like you've integrated your pain into your being, making you stronger, more sure of yourself, more content with where you're at and who you are. But there is no arguing that deep healing is hard af, just know that you're here, reading this now because you can do it. Keep going, you got this. (See our tips at the bottom of this article for how to support yourself during emotional shitstorms).

3. Amped Up Intuition and Gut Feelings

Intuition often manifests as a gut feeling, a hunch, or a strong sense of knowing something is right or wrong without any logical explanation. During a spiritual awakening, these feelings may become more frequent, stronger, and more reliable. You might find yourself making decisions based on a feeling you can't quite explain, and then later realizing it was the right choice. Additionally, your sensitivity to the energy around you could become heightened. You might start to pick up on the moods and emotions of others more easily, or sense the atmosphere of a place. This increased sensitivity can also inform your intuition, giving you subtle cues to pick up on. Check out our page about intuitive and psychic abilities for some more info on this.

4. A New Obsession with Nature

Are you feeling a strong pull to touch and smell the earth? Put your hands in the dirt, your bare feet in the grass, breathe in the smell of moss in the forest, or submerge yourself in the ocean. Maybe you're finding yourself filling your apartment with houseplants and giving them names and delighting in watching them grow. People experiencing a spiritual awakening often discover a newfound appreciation for the natural world and a desire to spend more time in nature, feeling a deeper connection to the earth and everyone on it- humans, plants, and animals included. This can also include a newfound appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature. The intricate details of a flower, the raw power and energy of a storm, or the calming rhythm of waves can all become profound experiences.  (Want to boost your next meditation with some nature sounds? 5. Synchronicities - But What Does it Meeeeean?

It's likely that you'll start noticing meaningful coincidences or synchronicities throughout your day. Some examples may include seeing repeating symbols or numbers, a specific animal appearing frequently, a certain song playing everywhere you go, or a particular phrase popping into your head repeatedly. Pay attention to these! Sometimes they are just little nudges from the Universe letting you know you're not alone and you're on the right path. Other times there can be messages within the synchronicity. So if you're seeing the same animal everywhere, look it up and see what the spiritual significance of that animal is. It might pertain to the exact situation you're going through, or it may lend you characteristics to get through what you're going through.

6. Zero Chill for Pop Culture

Once you start out on your spiritual path you may crave authenticity and genuine connections. You may find that pop culture, with its emphasis on superficiality, celebrity worship, and consumerism, feels hollow or inauthentic compared to more meaningful pursuits. As a result, you may choose to prioritize activities and interests that align with their values and contribute to their personal growth. In some cases, you might feel repelled from or allergic to pop culture for a while. This can look like not watching as much TV, not spending as much time on social media accounts that focus on superficiality, a lack of tolerance for music that feels inauthentic. You will probably come back to pop culture at some point, but your views of it will be drastically shifted... in a great way.

7. A Refrigerator & Pantry Overhaul

Many people going through a spiritual awakening start to feel a strong urge to eat healthier foods that nourish their body and/or are more environmentally friendly. This usually starts out slow and gradually increases until you realize that you've fully changed your diet. Many people start out with reducing their consumption of processed foods or being more mindful of where their food comes from. You might find yourself opting for locally sourced or organic options of food that were sustainably and humanly raised. You might just start to be more mindful of where your veggies were grown, where and who raised your meat, is the fish you're eating in balance with the environment? Often people will become more mindful of their food and then many find themselves removing foods or making alterations to their diets. This could mean you decide to go vegetarian or vegan, or you feel compelled to explore fasting or detoxification practices. There is no right or wrong answer here, just that your diet may change based on what your body wants, needs and craves once you embark on a spiritual journey.

8. Sponge-Mode for All Things Spiritual

Spiritual awakenings often involve an expansion of consciousness and awareness beyond the mundane of everyday life. As you start to really get to know yourself and the world around you, you may look for content that reflects your newly expanded perspective. You might find yourself scouring the internet for spiritual teachings, making your way to webinars and courses on spiritual or metaphysical topics, or devouring philosophical audio books that resonate with deeper truths and universal themes. You'll be ridiculously excited as you start to discover that some authors, artists and musicians are also "awake" and the content you used to consume takes on whole new meanings and depth. You'll also start to intentionally look for this content and find others who get what you're going through, and when you find them the feeling of being understood by them is unmatched in its vibrancy.

9. New or Rediscovered Hobbies, Activities and Artistic Flare

Have you started considering picking up a new instrument or getting back to one you played many years ago? Are you feeling an itch to sit down and write? Have you been thinking about taking up paintings/drawing/pottery/photography and then someone randomly gifts you the exact art supplies you need? Or maybe you previously enjoyed competitive sports but are now finding yourself drawn to yoga or meditation. Do you have a newfound interest in birdwatching? Go with it! A spiritual awakening often brings about a shift in priorities and interests. Activities that once seemed fulfilling may no longer resonate, while new hobbies and pursuits emerge that align more closely with your authentic self and spiritual path.

10. You Develop an Allergy to the News & Your Favorite True Crime Podcast

The world can sometimes seem like its filled with negativity, including violence, sensationalism, and materialism, which can be energetically draining when you're going through a spiritual awakening. As you become more attuned to your own energy and the energy around you, you may find it challenging to engage with content that doesn't align with your newfound sense of inner peace and harmony. Are you finding yourself steering away from watching the news because it's harder for you to consume when all it does is make you cry? (Try to find other ways you can stay informed without the over sensationalism). Or, maybe you used to love murder mysteries, true crime podcasts or horror movies but you're finding that they make you much more uncomfortable than they used to.  This can be kind of a downer if your comfort activities fall in this realm. However, the reality is that you've probably discovered new comfort activities that bring you much more peace and contentment and provide a sense of healing rather than fear-based escapism. Everyone needs some escapism sometimes, but lean into the new comfort activities and see what happens.
